Hayes Park School, in North West London is a diverse school with a high number of students with English as an additional language. Since the introduction of Latin, the school has thrived. Students have taken to latin with enthuisim , commenting on their enjoyment in linking latin vocabulary with English words.

The head teacher, Becky, is the driving force behind the subject. Having discovered the Minimus textbook in a gift shop in
Vindolanda, she instantly researched the benefits of teaching Latin. From her research, she became an advocate for the value of Latin and even incorporated it into her application for headship! As soon as she was appointed head, she contacted CfA and was provided Minimus resources and training.

The school, having historically taught Spanish, had issues with providing long term term specialists, causing a decrease in morale and consistent teaching. With the help of Classics for All, the school now have a Latin specialist, with the possibility of more support needed if staffing changes.

The school has a focus on developing student vocabulary, due to the large number of students for whom English is an additional language. The school have been working on a program of curriculum design that puts vocabulary acquisition at the heart of student learning, and introducing Latin has been at the heart of this. Teachers, Students, and Parents alike have had a positive reaction to the change. Students find latin fun and exciting, enjoying both the language and history elements it provides.
